Working with glass dates back to prehistoric times and was extensively developed in Egypt and brought to the fore by the Romans. Some of the earliest glass art can be seen in the European cathedrals that incorporated stained glass windows. Great ateliers like Tiffany, Lalique, and the Corning schools in upper New York State and Stubbe glass works took art glass to the highest levels.
